Thimphu: Kuzoo Radio Station

This post features student writing.

This morning, we visited Kuzoo Radio Station in order to understand how media works in Bhutan. We learned that there are technically two stations: one in English and the other in Dzongkha. On each station, the content varies, but among the broadcasts are ones talking about food, news updates, and many others. Both stations play music: the English one plays pop music from America as well as some classic rock, and the Dzongkha station plays modern Bhutanese music. They are introducing a new program that I think (and hope) that everyone was very excited about. It’s called “Girl Talk” and the target audience is girls aged 10-20, talking about sexual health, menstruation, harassment, and many other topics that aim to educate Bhutanese girls, since Kuzoo’s broadcast reaches all across the country. This forward progression in thinking is healthy for Bhutan.

We also were all allowed to talk on the radio, broadcasted live! Each of us introduced ourselves, gave our age, and told what we have loved about Bhutan so far.

This experience was one of the coolest so far because understanding how media works in a country is one of the best ways to feel how a country works. Media is so prevalent and rather essential, so being able to see how it functions in a place that came out of isolation only 45 years ago was truly a gift.
